Immigration Resources

Whenever encountering any problems or concerns regarding the immigration status or exploring the possibility of changing visa status to the F or J category, please consult one of our international student advisors for guidance. Also consult an ISA whenever there is a change in enrollment status, and whenever there is potential employment offer.  These topics are extremely important for maintaining valid immigration status in the U.S. and we strongly urge the student or scholar to seek advice first to avoid any potential visa status problems.

Financial Resources

Scholarships are forms of aid that help students pay for their education. Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be repaid. Generally, scholarships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who live in certain countries or who demonstrate financial need. Though funding opportunities for international students are scarce, we have compiled a list of some available options. Please review the Financial Resources section for additional detail. Some of these resources are managed by external organizations, thus for questions regarding specific eligibility criteria and the application process, contact the responsible organization or entity offering the scholarship.

The University Scholars Program
The University Scholars Program introduces undergraduate students at the University of Florida to the exciting world of academic research. International students are eligible to participate in this program.

Reitz Scholars Program
The J. Wayne Reitz Scholars Program is established to recognize and encourage academic achievement, leadership, and service among undergraduate students at the University of Florida. The program is named in honor of Dr. J. Wayne Reitz, who served as President of the University of Florida from 1955-67.

UFIC F-1 Graduate Student Emergency Hardship Scholarship
The UFIC has established a scholarship for international students experiencing unforeseen financial difficulties that are beyond their control.

Graduate School Dissertation Awards
This is a competitive award to provide final term funding for UF PhD candidates in selected majors in the humanities, arts, and social sciences to complete their dissertations through defense, final clearance by the Editorial Office, and graduation. This program is for students who have exhausted all funding and meant to allow recipients time and resources to focus exclusively on their dissertation.

Graduate School Doctoral Research Travel Award
The Graduate School Doctoral Research Travel Award provides research related travel expenses for UF PhD students in selected majors in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. This program is for students to effectively conduct doctoral dissertation research away from UF, when faced with inadequate departmental funding. A limited number of awards will be available each term, depending on the level of available funding.

Ofelia Anzola Memorial Scholarship
Student must be a full-time graduate or Ph.D. student currently enrolled in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Florida. Priority will be given to any student majoring in the Food and Resource Economics Department. This student must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5 and demonstrate some type of leadership position and extracurricular activities in the department/college/university. Student must have an interest in pursuing a career in agriculture or related field. International student, U.S. Citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply. Financial need is considered, but not required.

Social Science Research Council
SSRC fellowship and grant programs provide support and professional recognition to innovators within fields, and especially to younger researchers whose work and ideas will have longer-term impact on society and scholarship.

SOROS
OSI initiatives award grants, scholarships, and fellowships on a regular basis throughout the year.

LEO S. ROWE PAN AMERICAN FUND
The Rowe Fund awards educational loans to qualified persons from Latin American and Caribbean countries, to help them finance their higher studies in the United States.

Scholarships/Fellowships

Phi Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants exist to recognize scholarly endeavors. They are designed specifically to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge abroad. Thirty-eight grants, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded annually

Guide to Funding Resources For African Students
This list, compiled by The African-American Institute and updated/augmented by The Rockefeller Foundation, will provide African students interested in studying abroad, most particularly in North America, or in conducting research in Africa, with a sampling of organizations that provide awards for Africans or nationals from developing countries.  Also included are some organizations that provide awards open to all qualified applicants, and several Africa-related research and information technology resources on the Internet.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
AUCC administers more than 150 scholarship programs on behalf of the federal government, domestic and foreign agencies and private sector companies. The website provides information for Canadian students and researchers interested in studying, doing research or working in Canada or abroad. International scholars will find funding information on studying and doing research in Canada.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education.

Latin American-Caribbean (LAC) Scholarship
Under Florida statute 1009.21, full-time students from Latin America and the Caribbean (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) who receive scholarships from the US federal or Florida state government qualify for in-state tuition. This provision of the law provides an opportunity to encourage the continued internationalization of UF and to attract more high-quality students from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Southern Scholarship Foundation
SSF provides qualified students with rent-free housing scholarships at select universities in Florida.

AAUW American Association of University Women Education Foundation
One of the world's largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women, the AAUW Educational Foundation supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented.

Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund
The MMMF was founded in 1981 in memory of Margaret Graig McNamara, honorary president of WBFN from 1972 to 1981. Every year, the Fund gives grants to five or six young women from developing countries engaged in studies for a degree in the United States.

Florida's International Linkage Institutes
List of countries that the State of Florida has partnered with. These partnerships provide for academic exchange and benefits such as waiver of out-of-state tuition for qualified students.

Cornell University Graduate School Fellowship Notebook

Rotary
The Rotary Foundation's Ambassadorial Scholarship is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. More than 1,100 scholarships were awarded for study in 2002-03. Through grants totaling approximately US$26 million, recipients from some 69 countries studied in more than 64 nations.

Fulbright
