Elaine C. Seaver, Ph.D.
Last month, Professor Elaine Seaver from the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience and the Department of Biology participated in a five day international workshop in Copenhagen Denmark. The workshop featured both formal talks and discussion-based sessions on a variety of topics. The workshop focused on utilizing differential gene expression, comparative and functional genomics for studies of the evolution and development of non-model marine invertebrates. Seaver gave the lead formal presentation and lead a second discussion session with an opening short talk. Participants were by invitation and represented eight different countries. “It was very stimulating to engage in person with international colleagues after staying close to home for several years because of the pandemic” says Seaver, “The success of the workshop was due in part to the careful choice of participants who were willing to share ideas and function as a team in a collegial manner - this is a complement to the organizer ”. Seaver initiated two new research collaborations as a result of this trip, and used her expertise to help both junior and established participants establish research priorities and problem solve technical challenges in each of their study animals.
