With less than a month to go before celebrating International Education Week, the University of Florida is proud to announce that 10 scholars received the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award.

Our 2023/2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar awardees are:

brandt

Dr. Steven Brandt – Anthropology – Dr. Brandt will be going to Ethiopia and will be hosted by Addis Ababa University. Dr. Brandt will be conducting research at the National Museum on the origins and dispersal of modern human cultural behavior over the last 100,000 years. He will also be teaching and advising on curriculum development.

Dr. Daniel Fernandez GuevaraHistory – Dr. Fernandez Guevara will be going to Spain and will be hosted by the Spanish National Research Council. He will work on unearthing the origins of Spanish solidarity with Cuba’s Proletariat, 1868-1930.

Dr. Shiva GautamPublic Health – Dr. Gautam will be going to Nepal and will be hosted by the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, where he will enhance and invigorate quantitative literacy through teaching and research.

Dr. Aida HozicPolitical Science – Dr. Hozic was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award. She will be going to the United Kingdom, where she will be hosted by Pembroke College at Oxford University. Dr. Hozic will conduct a seminar on Feminist Political Economy of War and Peace.

Dr. Robert McCleeryWildlife Ecology and Conservation – Dr. McCleery will be going to South Africa and will be hosted by the University of Mpumalanga. He will be working to understand how the planet’s last remaining mega-herbivores, such as elephants, can maximize biodiversity and carbon storage in savannas. Additionally, he and colleagues will study how artificial surface water reshapes the hippo population and how these populations cycle nutrients and alter plant and animal communities.

Dr. Kevin McDanielArcheology – Dr. McDaniel will be going to Brazil and will investigate ancient cuisine’s effects on contemporary landscapes in the Caxiauanã Forest, Amazonia.

Mr. Oren OkhovatHistory – Mr. Okhovat will be going to Spain and will be hosted by Universidad de Sevilla, where he will be looking at the Cosmopolitan Empire: international merchant companies and Spanish imperialism, 1580-1714.

Dr. Ido OrenInternational Relations – Dr. Oren will be going to Austria and will be hosted by the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. He will be working on the intersection of theory and practice in International Affairs.

Dr. Remy Pages – Early Childhood Studies, Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship –Dr. Pages will be going to Kigali, Rwanda. His research project is aimed at assessing Rwanda’s needs of early childhood care infrastructure, based on administrative data and the 2022 census.

YangHuiping

Dr. Huiping YangSchool of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences. The University of Murcia will host Dr. Yang. He will work on building an international collaboration in aquaculture by initiating a pilot study on shellfish immunological assays, as well as participating in other cultural and educational activities.

The principal purpose of the Fulbright program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the peoples of the more than 150 countries that participate in the program. Fulbright aims to establish open communication and cooperative relationships by enriching Americans’ understanding of the educational, political, economic, social and cultural realities of countries around the world. Fulbright partners with participating governments, host institutions, corporations, and foundations in the United States as well as in other countries.
