Rujeko Dumbutshena is an MFA and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance, and 2022 Global Fellow. Dumbutshena’s research is focused on the “intersection of gender, power and ritual performance and how these are reflected in contemporary performances of Black women in Africa and the Diaspora.” Dumbutshena intends to use her Global Fellow sponsorship to travel to West Africa
to enrich the resources accessible to teachers of African dance. She wishes to develop curriculum and inform conference presentations and written articles, as well as source document materials supported by the communities of West Africa her research represents. Dumbutshena wishes to use her research to support artists living in Africa and the Diaspora, working to sustain their cultures and communities through the practice and teaching of Dance.
