Studying abroad is an enriching experience that allows one to explore the elements of another culture while also exploring their own identity. You may find that while you’re abroad, certain aspects of your identity become engaged or challenged in new ways. For example, people in some countries are less accustomed to meeting Black people due to local demographics. Other countries are less accepting or even tolerant of the LGBTQ+ community. Some do not have great systems or policies in place to assist those with disabilities. There may also be varying degrees of social awareness within the same country, based on an urban vs. rural setting, local culture and politics, and regional history.
Before you depart for your study abroad program, we strongly encourage you to think about your identities, how they intersect, and the situations you may find yourself in while abroad. The UF International Center, The Center for Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement, and other offices on-campus are dedicated to ensuring you have a safe and positive study abroad experience. Please explore the resources below and let us know if you would like to speak with an advisor to discuss these topics further.
