Professor John Freeman and Adjunct Professor Daron Dean, led this study-abroad course to Berlin from May 12 to May 25, 2023. It was the 17th summer students conducted field research to document the spirit and vitality of the city.

During the two-week course, 19 students were introduced to the city through bicycle and walking tours, followed by cultural excursions and other meetings. As part of UFIC’s initiative to get beyond “Helicopter” approaches in research collaborations, Claudia Garnica (Biology and TCD) and Karen Kainer (SFFGS, LAS, and TCD) facilitated a workshop at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Association of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) in Coimbatore, India.

Increasingly, tropical biologists and other scientists are called upon to address the inequities of “Helicopter Science” - when researchers from higher income or more privileged settings drop into resource-poor settings to gather data with limited to no involvement or acknowledgment of contributions by local partners and/or communities.

A UF Faculty delegation visited Kurdistan during a week-long trip funded by IREX. The team included Nargiza Ludgate (PI), Diwakar Vyas, Jennifer Clark, and Michael Kung (International Center). The group partnered with the University of Garmian’s College of Agricultural Engineering Science in Iraqi Kurdistan to help with a curriculum needs assessment and workforce development gap study. Other activities involved participating in an online capacity development program in agriculture entrepreneurship and animal production.

The West African nation Niger is under military rule following a coup in which President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown and held captive by members of his own guard.

On July 28, 2023, coup leaders named General Abdourahmane Tchiani as the new head of state, while international observers called for democratic norms to be reinstalled.
