International Student Services and Exchange Student Services hosted the F-1 Undergraduate and J-1 Exchange Students Orientation at the Reitz Union. Students attended campus tours guided by the UF Cicerones as well as presentations by campus partners, after a warm welcome by Dean Marta L. Wayne. F-1 and J-1 regulations were covered. This busy and eventful day included tabling by campus partners such as the Social Security Administration, and the Florida Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles.

Dr. Kathleen Colverson was recently in Rwanda and Ethiopia to facilitate workshops and undertake research with graduate students at the University of Rwanda and Addis Ababa University. The research was part of planned work with the USAID funded Livestock Systems Innovation Lab (https://livestocklab.ifas.ufl.edu/) and involved examining the roles of smallholder male and female farmers in both the pork and poultry value chains. Professor John Freeman and Adjunct Professor Daron Dean, led this study-abroad course to Berlin from May 12 to May 25, 2023. It was the 17th summer students conducted field research to document the spirit and vitality of the city.

During the two-week course, 19 students were introduced to the city through bicycle and walking tours, followed by cultural excursions and other meetings. This year we visited international illustrator Christoph Niemann. As part of UFIC’s initiative to get beyond “Helicopter” approaches in research collaborations, Claudia Garnica (Biology and TCD) and Karen Kainer (SFFGS, LAS, and TCD) facilitated a workshop at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Association of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) in Coimbatore, India.

Increasingly, tropical biologists and other scientists are called upon to address the inequities of “Helicopter Science” - when researchers from higher income or more privileged settings drop into resource-poor settings to gather data with limited to no involvement or acknowledgment of contributions by local partners and/or communities.

A UF Faculty delegation visited Kurdistan during a week-long trip funded by IREX. The team included Nargiza Ludgate (PI), Diwakar Vyas, Jennifer Clark, and Michael Kung (International Center). The group partnered with the University of Garmian’s College of Agricultural Engineering Science in Iraqi Kurdistan to help with a curriculum needs assessment and workforce development gap study. Other activities involved participating in an online capacity development program in agriculture entrepreneurship and animal production.
