4-H is the largest positive youth development program globally and is delivered by Cooperative Extension through more than 100 public universities. For more than 100 years, 4-H has provided experiences where kids learn by doing. There are over 70 independent, country-led 4-H programs around the world. November 3rd was International One Health Day, and the One Health Student Association celebrated with two exciting events during the week.

On November 1st, they held an interdisciplinary panel of experts at UF to discuss anti-microbial resistance. Sanford (Sandy) Berg, Professor Emeritus, Economics, and Senior Fellow, Public Utility Research Center, served as one of three Peer Reviewers for the OECD’s Assessment and Recommendations for Peru’s water and sanitation services regulator, Sunass. He participated in a series of Zoom interviews over three days and reviewed the Draft Report this November. He also participated in a regulatory conference where the results of the assessment were presented. He has been monitoring Peru’s key performance indicators since 1999, so this gave him a chance to bring his experience to bear on the challenging issues facing this developing nation. The UF Public Utility Research Center hosted a successful in-person international training program where 11 countries came to Gainesville in October to study how their energy and broadband services can expand through the rest of the pandemic and afterward. This is the first time since January 2020 that the Public Utility Research Center has been able to bring multiple countries together to work on their most pressing infrastructure issues. The October program included 30 utility regulators and professionals from such places as diverse as The Bahamas, Mozambique, and Albania. UF engineering faculty members, Jeremiah Blanchard, and Mariko Adachi of Kyoto University organized a cross-cultural engineering seminar series for students. Kevin Butler, Kansun Cho, Andrea Goncher, Hitomi Greenslet, Amanpreet Kapoor, Gloria Kim, and John Schueller were the other UF faculty. Takehiko Yokomine, Shu Seki, Kazuaki Yorozu, Kentaro Kaneko, Yosuke Komiyama, and Hiroshi Takatsu represented Kyoto University for the three seminars in October and three in November. From October 4th – 6th, the Think20 Summit was held in Milan, Italy. One of the Engagement Groups of the G20, the T20 “brings together leading think tanks and research centers from around the world, with the aim of contributing, through research and policy proposals, to the G20 Leaders’ reflections on the big issues related to global governance.”

“Latin America Writes Back 2.0: Political and Environmental Crisis in Science Fiction” commemorates and extends UF’s landmark 2005 symposium, “Latin America Writes Back.” That symposium identified UF as an early pioneer in the growing field of Latin American SF studies and featured talks by author/scholar Edmundo Paz Soldán and scholar J. Andrew Brown. This new workshop brought back those key participants of the 2005 event and added other scholars and writers who are helping to shape the future of SF in the Caribbean, the Andean region, the Southern Cone, and Mexico, and Brazil.
